Identity

In the communion between the artist and the work, there is a translation of the maker’s identity. Sometimes identity is advanced in a technically or ideologically daring new way, sometimes in the welcome continuity of a familiar theme.

Can that identity be perceived in a printmaker’s line? In the collagist’s use of texture or the painter’s choice of color? Surely, there is a dash of mystery in the exchange between artist and viewer. When complete, it’s a conversation involving both revelation and recognition. We come to know something about the artist—and perhaps—about ourselves..
