2nd Friday Art - ED COHEN
March 4th, 2019 - April 5th, 2019

Artist: Ed Cohen

Susan Tibbles
Curator/ Director

LIGHT WATER FIRE EARTH • 2019

The origin of my work stems from Ensō - paintings made in the 17th century by Japanese monks who drew circles using black ink. Ensō’s were intended to reflect the painter’s state of mind and to express aspects of his faith and philosophy.
I am obsessed with circles, which represent for me the harmony within the cosmos.
As with the monks, many of my paintings represent my state of mind, and hopefully, the presence of mindfulness.
By working with the medium of fluid acrylic, I am able to manipulate the flow and drip of the paint itself to create a sense of fluidity and to maximize the vibrant feeling of color.
Light is what makes paintings breathe.
Water lives in the flow.
Ultimately, my work rests on the Zen Buddhist notion of an ongoing search for the joy in making work in pursuit of the sublime.
